The Battle Royale genre typically entails a number of players being brought to a large and open arena with little to no starting equipment. After which, they will scavenge for resources and weapons hidden across the map in the pursuit of eliminating every other opposing player. The objective for these kinds of games is to become the last player or team to survive.
Battle Royale games have taken over multiplayer gaming over the past few years, and it doesn't look like slowing down any time soon! By allowing people to play with friends, and usually providing a free-to-play service, the genre has allowed casual and competitive gamers alike to team up and head into battle. With the high stakes and a fairly tall skill ceiling, Battle Royale's have become an excellent outlet to test oneβs abilities, promote good teamwork, and has proven to be a near-perfect catalyst for live stream entertainment.
In late 2017, into early 2018. PUBG (Player Unknowns Battlegrounds) and Fortnite took over the gaming scene. PUBG at its peak still holds the Steam record for highest concurrent players at 3.25 million players, eclipsing any other game!
These releases were quickly followed by Apex Legends in 2019, and Warzone in 2020. All of which continue to maintain popularity and a strong player base.
From 2018-2019, Fortnite made $9 billion! Impressive for a free-to-play game. That's because these games rely on a Battle Pass system as well as allowing players to purchase character and weapon skins. A new Battle Pass is generally available for purchase when a new season begins. These seasons can contain map updates, new characters, new weapons, new cosmetics, XP boosts + more. Keeping the game refreshing and fun for the players.
